SUMMARY:WHAT SHALL WE DO TOMORROW?
DESCRIPTION:Glad works figuratively\, often from photographs or found images\, using disrupted surfaces and textures built up with oil paint\, sand\, pebbles\, varnish\, graphite and other materials. His work includes landscape\, portraiture and abstraction and his themes range from personal biographic subject matter to current political and world news stories. Come and see! \nGlad writes: “The work in this exhibition\, ‘What shall we do tomorrow’\, explores how we live with images both worn out and potent. I am at once driven by an amnesic compulsion (a drive towards loss and annihilation of memory) to archive and aestheticise images\, while equally coveting their ability to prick\, puncture and cut through the dispassionate collecting\, which can yield moments of insight that extend knowledge. While painting\, I have authorship of this personal\, political\, ethical\, aesthetic and embodied experience. It occurs between archiving and forgetting\, between material and signification\, between interiority and exteriority. These re-acquaintances with images are critical to the formulation of ‘self’. \nGlad Fryer has been painting since he was a teenager. He has had a studio practice since 1998 and originally moved to Devon to do a Fine Art degree at Dartington College of Arts\, followed by a Phd in Painting completed in 2007. Since then\, he has been a University Lecturer in Fine Art and currently teaches on the Fine Art course in Falmouth. He has his studio in Buckfastleigh\, Devon\, where he lives with his partner and their children. Glad has exhibited his work in various solo and group shows in the UK and in Europe – more details on his website. www.gladfryer.co.uk \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cancelled - Mothiur Rahman – The connection between Sufism\, Justice and the balancing of The Sacred Masculine and Feminine
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately Mothiur has had to postpone his talk due to family circumstances. We haven’t fixed a new date yet. \nMothiur will speak about his exploration of how Sufism and the masculine and feminine energies can reshape new understandings of justice\, using his poetry as a vehicle for expressing some of the sentiments.  He is a member of the Mankind Project\, was “artist in resident” for a Sufi Conference in Kendall in 2017 that explored the Feminine and Masculine in balance\, and took part in a transnational law conference at Kings College in London on “Creating Justice for our Future” . He recently wrote a guest article for a series on The Feminine hosted at St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation & Peace in London called “Male Encounters with the Feminine”. \nMothiur is a lawyer by training and is setting up a practice called New Economy Law (https://www.neweconomylaw.org).

SUMMARY:In Between both sides of my heart
DESCRIPTION:Opening Event: Saturday 7th April\, 4-7pm\n< IN BETWEEN BOTH SIDES OF MY HEART > \nshows a selection of drawings / paintings / photographs that have been created over the last decade. \nDeeply touched by the Beauty and Terror of being human and the ongoing inspiration of finding my place and voice in this world\, I open myself to give gratitude for Nature and her always inspiring Presence\, for the possibility of creating openness and movement \, to share and hopefully inspire us to keep on dreaming\, creating\, celebrating\, dancing our quest for more sense of balance in Life. \nYou are welcome to have a gentle dive into my creations. \nLies Van Hee \nLies Van hee is an artist\, a mom\, dancer and partner\, currently living in the abundant beauty of the Devon Hills and Dartmoor. From a young age\, she is deeply touched and inspired by the Beauty and Terror of being human\, the state of connection between Humanity and Nature and the ongoing journey of finding her place and voice in this world. In 2007 she receives her masterdegree in Visual Arts with a video/installation/drawings “ Beware of not getting Lost “ and she starts an in depth study into the proces of creation\, which led her towards exploration of different workshops\, ceremonies\, ways of co-creating with other people. In 2010 she and her partner welcome their son into the family. She replaces her studio for one suitcase\, travelling through the landscapes of motherhood\, relationships\, gardening\, Nature… Filling those precious moments of space with drawing/silence/dreaming/writing/listening/photograpy/dancing. \nAt this time she starts to dance on very regular base. The language of her art is changing through movement and dance becomes a very close friend to the visual aspect of her creations. \nHer work has been described as “ highly creative and sensitive\, opening\, reflective\, subtle\, visionary\, moving\, powerfull\, beyond words\, soultouching\, Essence\, Silence\, Poetic\, playfull\, light\, magical\, mystical\, clear\, deeply connected with Nature and Spirit\, and a deep exploration of the essence of the elements and our interconnection with them\, combining a profound intuitive understanding of our inter dependency with nature and the sacred aspect of it”.  www.liesvanhee.com \nAs ‘artist in residence’ she is part of Middle Earth Medicine Ways\, a center founded by Caroline Carey\, where you will find internationally run courses in movement and ecstatic dance\, with connections to our ancestral stories\, to nature and to the elements. A place to learn about your innate creativity\, your own healing path\, discovering rituals and ceremonial work that is both traditional and new. Through this process and specializing in body (movement) and heart (emotion) centered practices including the deep journey into our shadows\, there are many opportunities for personal growth and developing your own journey. The essence of this work is to marry our core wounds with our aspirations to discover our authentic and fully integrated self\, thus becoming truly empowered\, allowing the soul and the ego to live in harmony. www.middleearthmedicine.com \n  \n<> \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opening Evening - Renewals and Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Karn writes:\nRenewal and Reflections – the cycle of the seasons and now spring bringing forth new life. A new start\, a new beginning each day\, with the sunrise and the sunset\, the stillness of water and the stormy seas. \nIt is my love of the peace and tranquility we can find in nature that has influenced me in the paintings that I am doing now. \nI travelled some years ago with my husband and small children in Europe and North Africa\, both of us painted and played music. We spent time in the mountains\, the desert and by the sea\, and the memories of the places we went to have inspired me in these recent paintings. \nPrevious to this\, I studied ceramics at Art College\, worked in potteries in Denmark and at Poole Pottery. I continue to make pottery\, both sculptural and functional. I also studied paint effects\, finishes and murals\, from which I have done several commissions. \nMy paintings are mostly oil on canvas. I have the good fortune of painting with a lovely group of women and learning techniques from a wonderful mentor whose knowledge is truly inspiring.\n \n\n \n \n\n Brian writes:\nArt is something that I always loved to do – be it painting\, pen doodles and the more fine-art based abstract photography. The photography side of things was where I started from (but even then the artwork was always there – sometimes as inspiration to the photos)\, drawings and abstracts in watercolours and pen and ink\, plus a few tentative attempts at putting ideas down on canvas. \nThe major and more recent “why” comes down to experiencing one of those unwanted\, unwelcome and prolonged periods of being out of work some years ago now. And I was looking for something to fill that otherwise dead time whilst waiting to hear about jobs that so often failed to materialise\, something that wasn’t too much of a drain on my then limited resources. So painting it was! \nInitially starting with a purely abstract – seeing what worked and what didn’t. From there gradually evolving into a more structured approach\, but still keeping that abstract feel to what I was doing. Also seeing how that approach worked on found objects like driftwood\, as well as doing more traditional – i.e. “proper” paintings – and in the last few months blending these two styles together to see how they worked together – one of which is included in the current exhibition. \nI hope you enjoy the exhibition and that the above goes some way to explaining what exactly it is that I do! \nFor further info/commissions please contact: brian.weatherup@homecall.co.uk\nor visit Brian Weatherup on Facebook
