SUMMARY:Kirtan Singing
DESCRIPTION:With Leo and Sundara. \nAccompanied by harmonium and guitar\, we will sing Indian devotional chants based on simple mantras. These “sung prayers” invoke the qualities of Indian deities like Shiva\, Krishna\, Durga\, Saraswati and Ganesha\, qualities such as love\, creativity\, courage and compassion that are all present within us and that can be brought more fully into our lives by singing together in this way. No prior experience is necessary. Arrive a little earlier if you like for a cup of tea and some time to connect before we begin. No need to book in advance\, but please bring a cushion of a backjack if you can. \nSundara and Leo Sofer have been leading singing events together since 2003. In recent years they have fallen in love with bhajans\, the devotional songs of India\, which are sung mostly in Sanskrit at gatherings known as kirtans. \nSundara plays the harmonium and Leo plays the guitar to accompany these songs. Having two instruments present enables people to sing freely and to relax into the experience\, supported by the music.

SUMMARY:Taize Singing
DESCRIPTION:The songs of Taize are easy to learn and uplifting to sing. \nTaize is a Christian monastery in the South of France famous for its beautiful songs. We’ll sing them in three or four part harmony\, in Latin as well as various European languages. We’ll have a time for silent prayer also. We’ll keep teaching to a minimum and sing for the pure enjoyment of the devotional atmosphere that these songs evoke. \nLeo and Sundara started leading Taize singing in 2003\, at the Findhorn Community in Scotland. These events are open to people of all faiths and none. \nDoors open at 7pm. Come early for a cup of tea and a chat if you like.

SUMMARY:Singing Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:With Leo and Sundara \nAccompanied by harmonium and guitar we’ll sing devotional songs in English. These original songs are based on prayers and sayings from spiritual traditions around the world. No prior experience is necessary. \nHere’s one of the songs we often sing: Love Flows Like a River \n \nAnd you can find another of our songs here: Divine Mother \nAbout these songs\nSundara and I have been leading singing events together since 2003\, beginning in the Findhorn community\, an eclectic spiritual community in the north of Scotland. We started with the songs of Taize\, an ecumenical Christian monastery in France. Although Findhorn is not a Christian community\, these simple and easy-to-learn songs were very popular there because they expressed a universal spirituality that many people could relate to. \nThese songs gave us a taste for the beauty of singing together in a devotional spirit. Devotional singing isn’t a new thing\, but it’s one of the many ancient-yet-essential things that we’ve lost in the modern world. \nWe also explored gospel songs and the Harmonic Temple songs of Nickomo Clarke\, which take sacred phrases from many traditions and set them to four-part harmony. We kept learning new songs and sharing our favourites. \nInspiration from India\nAnd then a few years ago\, Sundara started singing bhajans\, the devotional songs of India. She taught herself to play the harmonium and I joined her with the guitar\, and we found that the music could support people to drop into a devotional way of singing together without feeling self-conscious. We’ve been singing those songs ever since\, and have led many “Kirtan” evenings here at The Dragon Sanctuary. \nBut a niggle started to arise. What about songs in English? How could we write songs that were equally devotional but sung in our own language? We’d experienced that with the few Taize songs that we’d sing in English (they are mostly in Latin\, and other European languages)\, and with gospel songs and some of the English-language Harmonic Temple songs too. Sometimes singing in your own language can make the experience even more powerful. \nSo Sundara wrote some songs and we’ve found a few more from other song-composers that we love. Our repertoire keeps on growing… \nDevotional songs in English\nThere’s a fine line to be walked with these songs. Singing in one’s own language can be potent\, but it can also be fraught. No-one likes being told what to think or feel\, and for some of us the legacy of church hymns can make us wary of this sort of singing. And some “new age” songs can be a bit “cringey” (as our teenage kids would say). \nThe songs we’ve found are (we hope) devotional without being didactic\, heart-felt without being hammy. Just like the best devotional songs\, they help you get out of your mind and into your heart. Like the bhajans\, we sing them with the harmonium and guitar. We hope you will want to join us! As stated already\, no prior experience is necessary\, and there’s no need to book in advance. \n

SUMMARY:The Man with Empty Hands
DESCRIPTION:Stories of the Journey Home presents\nStorytelling for the Spiritual Journey \nThe Man with Empty Hands features a King overwhelmed by the demands of ruling his Kingdom; a carpenter losing touch with his love for his craft; and a fisherman who rows into the centre of a lake one morning to find a huge golden fish swimming beneath his boat. \nStorytelling has the power to draw us into deep soul-enquiry\, using symbol and metaphor to allow us to dream big. This story will explore the theme of self-acceptance. \nHow much do you accept yourself?\nHave you twisted yourself out of shape to gain other people’s acceptance?\nWe all do it\, the question is how to recover those parts of ourselves that we’ve pushed into the shadows. \nThis story takes a deep dive into the theme of self-acceptance.\nThe more we accept ourselves\, the more we can open to our divine potential.\nOur true nature shines forth when we are meticulously loving and kind towards ourselves. \nFeedback from our last storytelling show for adults at The Dragon Sanctuary\nI was blown away by the story\, it was magical. I was spellbound\, and feel myself in this moment completely transformed by it. The words and music wove in so beautifully together\, the setting also really helped – I was transported somewhere else…. and it was very healing. I left feeling so inspired and uplifted. The evening reconnected me with that impulse to surrender and let spirit carry me.\nNeesa Copple \nLeo Sofer has been telling stories since 1989. Sundara plays handpan\, sansullah and tenor recorder to accompany the story. They have been setting stories to music together for over 20 years. For more information about their work\, see here. \nEvent time is two and half hours\, with an interval.

SUMMARY:Harmonic Temple
DESCRIPTION:The Harmonic Temple songs\, created by Nickomo Clarke\, are sung in 3 or 4 part harmony and are based on prayers and sayings from spiritual traditions around the world. \nNickomo was inspired by the songs of Taize and wanted to create songs that were similarly easy to learn and uplifting to sing but drawn from all faiths. Some of his compositions are awe-inspiringly beautiful. \nWe’ll be singing some of our favourites\, including his masterpiece: I Am a River. \nThe songs are learned by ear (no sheet music) and then\, when we are confident of our part\, we can move around the room\, experiencing the harmonies all around us\, literally creating a Harmonic Temple with our voices. \nLeo and Sundara began leading Harmonic Temple songs in 2003\, while living at the Findhorn Community in Scotland. \nNo prior experience is required. Come early for a cup of tea if you like\, doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

SUMMARY:In the Belly of the Whale
DESCRIPTION:Leo and Sundara Sofer will be sharing a story with music that goes to the heart of the question “how to live with devotion?” \nHow to live with love\, with purpose and with intention? How to stay true to yourself in even the most trying circumstance? How to stay aligned to your highest purpose even when life pulls you down? How to remain with love when all hell breaks loose? \nIt tells four interwoven stories: of a prisoner in a prison cell who has lost all hope; a knight who walks away from an endless battle; a young woman searching for the golden thread that will complete her dress and a Queen who has become overwhelmed by her troubles and finds the solution to them in the belly of a whale. \nDrawing all of these lives together\, the story shows how in every circumstance we have the power and the support within to make seemingly impossible changes for the better. \nLeo has been telling stories for over 30 years. Sundara plays handpans\, flutes\, accordion and harmonium to accompany the story.

No need to book in advance. \nSundara and Leo Sofer have been leading singing events together since 2003. They previously taught in Findhorn (a spiritual community in Scotland)\, with an especial focus on the songs of Taize (a Christian monastery in France) and Nickomo Clarke’s Harmonic Temple songs (based on sacred phrases from diverse spiritual traditions).  \nIn recent years they have fallen in love with bhajans\, the devotional songs of India\, which are sung mostly in Sanskrit at gatherings known as kirtans. They are also creating songs in English which are short and easy to learn\, and that can also be sung in a devotional spirit. \nSundara plays the harmonium and Leo plays the guitar to accompany these songs. SUMMARY:The Mystic Rose
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling from Leo Sofer\, with music by Sundara Sofer\nThis performance charts a course through three interwoven stories\, showing the challenges of the spiritual journey\, in three different ways. \nThe first story begins with a young man\, lost in the desert\, and coming upon a rose of unparalleled beauty…. \n \nThe second story concerns a young sailor\, so skilled at her craft that she can sail to any destination\, in any conditions. \nBut then she discovers a way of travelling without a destination in mind\, and a whole new world opens up. \n \nThe third story concerns a Prince and Princess\, both besotted with the same dream of the Mystic Rose. \nThe journey they take to fulfill their dreams is the thread that ties all these three stories together. \n \nThe structure of the story-within-a-story-within-a-story has been used by storytellers for thousands of years to take listeners into a deeper and deeper space of listening and quiet inside. We use this structure to allow our audience to take a journey in themselves\, opening up to their own relationship to the object of their deepest desires.\nThe Mystic Rose is a symbol for this “most wanted” thing\, and although we might all have our own path to it\, and picture it in different ways\, it is ultimately the same for all human beings – a place of intimate rest and beloved beauty\, which is also a gift to the world. \nWe hope you will join us on a journey to the heart of the Mystic Rose!\n\n\nLeo Sofer has been telling stories for over thirty years\, Sundara plays handpan and flutes to create a magical musical soundscape for the stories. \nThis performance is aimed at an adult audience. However\, if you feel your child can sit through a 90+ minute evening performance you are welcome to bring them. The show is not especially dark or “adult” but it has been created with adults in mind. Email us if you have any questions: info@dragonsanctuary.co.uk

These original songs are based on prayers and sayings from spiritual traditions around the world. No prior experience is necessary. Arrive a little earlier if you like for a cup of tea and some time to connect before we begin. No need to book in advance. \nHere’s an example of the songs we sing. This is Love Flows Like a River\, by Sundara. \n \nAbout these songs\nSundara and I have been leading singing events together since we met in 2003 in the Findhorn community\, an eclectic spiritual community in the north of Scotland. We started with the songs of Taize\, an ecumenical Christian monastery in France. SUMMARY:Cancelled - Singing Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Now that the government has mandated mask-wearing at venues like ours\, we’ve sadly decided to cancel this event\, sorry! \nWe tried to imagine singing while wearing a face mask\, but it didn’t look like a good idea. But we’ll be resuming our singing events as soon as these restrictions have been lifted. \nUntil then\, we’re wishing you a lovely Christmas and New Year! \nLeo and Sundara \n

Arrive a little earlier if you like for a cup of tea and some time to connect before we begin. No need to book in advance. \nAbout these songs\n\nSundara and I have been leading singing events together since we met in 2003 in the Findhorn community\, an eclectic spiritual community in the north of Scotland. \nAnd then a few years ago\, Sundara started singing bhajans\, the devotional songs of India. We’d experienced that with the few Taize songs that we’d sing in English\, and with gospel songs and some of the English-language Harmonic Temple songs too. Sometimes singing in your own language can make the experience even more powerful. \nSo Sundara wrote about half a dozen songs and we’ve found a few from other song-composers that we love\, and we now have a small set\, enough for an evening at least! \nThere’s a fine line to be walked with these songs. Singing in one’s own language can be potent\, but it can also be fraught. No-one likes being told what to think or feel\, and for some of us the legacy of church hymns can make us wary of this sort of singing. And some “new age” songs can be a bit “cringey” (as our teenage daughter would say). \nThe songs we’ve found are (we hope) devotional without being didactic\, heart-felt without being hammy. Just like the best devotional songs\, they help you get out of your mind and into your heart. Like the bhajans\, we sing them with the harmonium and guitar. For this\, our first evening\, we’ll sing about six of these songs\, over an hour and a half. We hope you will want to join us! \n

Having two instruments present enables people to sing freely and to relax into the experience\, supported by the music.

SUMMARY:Healing Separation
DESCRIPTION:We are all born whole – with no limitation and no lack. Babies do not separate themselves from nature like adults do. They do not perceive the “outside” world as any different from the “inside” world\, nor do they have a sense of “me”. \nBecause of this they live in the most amazing freedom. This is a freedom of BEING. They are whole and complete because there is no separation between them and the world. \nBut the separation slowly starts to creep in. Our world\, our society trains us all to differentiate not just between self and other\, but between self and nature and self and the divine. Adults living in this modern\, technological society are so very far from the freedom and wholeness of our babyhood. Cut off from others\, cut off from nature\, cut off from the divine. Isolated and alone. \nWhat can bring down the walls? What can restore our sense of interconnection with the world\, with nature and the divine? \nCome and listen to a story by Leo Sofer\, which tells of a Queen who discovers a hidden palace in the mountains where an elder Queen instructs her in the art of union – union of heart\, mind and body – a healing which restores her whole realm to goodness and vitality. \nLeo has been telling intuitive stories for almost 25 years. His storytelling unlocks the hidden parts of our psyche\, that have been lying dormant\, waiting for the right story. \nNote: Jellyfish is still closed to the public. This is an online event\, streamed live from Jellyfish. Click the link below to watch it online.

SUMMARY:How to Unlock Your Heart - online live stream
DESCRIPTION:Our hearts tend to get “locked” when we experience an overwhelming loss or hurt. In this locked state\, we don’t let ourselves receive all the love that the world wants to give us\, or allow all the love inside us to flow out into the world.  \nBut love wants to flow\, nonetheless. Sometimes life knocks so hard on the door that it becomes impossible to resist. Sometimes the love in us feels like it is bursting to be shared.  \nHow then to unlock our hearts? This is the question I posed my inner storyteller recently. In this live stream I’ll be sharing the story that came to me.  \nNote: Jellyfish is still closed to the public. This is an online event\, streamed live from Jellyfish. Click the link below to watch it online. \nWatch it on You Tube here. \n
