Carry My Prayer
Leo writes:
I can say that I’ve really lived this song. I won’t go into the personal details but there was an occasion not long ago when this song really came to our rescue.
Do prayers have any effect? My personal experience tells me they do. And the challenges I faced on that occasion seemed so overwhelming as to be beyond the power of any prayer. All seemed beyond hope, and yet what else can we do at such times?
So, one evening, not long after composing this song and teaching it to me, Sundara found herself leading a Singing Sanctuary evening alone. I found myself at A+E, in a terrible shape with a real crisis on my hands, and unable to help her lead the event.
I checked my watch, and realised that she was likely to be starting the event right then. I went outside, and started to sing.
Wind of the North
Carry my prayer, carry my prayer
Over the land, over the land
Oh, carry my prayer, carry my prayer
It’s a powerful song, and cycles through all four elements, in all four cardinal directions. Walking through the hospital car park singing it, wondering if she’d started the evening with it, I found myself praying with my whole body; praying with my wife, praying with whoever had turned up at The Dragon Sanctuary that night.
As it happened, Sundara had a large crowd that evening, and (as I had hoped) had started with that song. It was a magical evening for her, and a magical moment for us both.
Carry my prayer became a kind of talisman for us, a magical charm that we’d return to again and again over the coming months: a prayer of hope, even when things seemed hopeless.
And now, three years later, the seemingly impossible has happened. Healing beyond our wildest dreams. A miracle, in fact.
Do prayers work? My experience tells me they do. This song reminds me to lean into them with my whole body, summoning the support of the most powerful forces I know. It’s then that miracles can happen.
